Update on the casting of the Runaways comic book movie!

August 26, 2010

A couple of weeks ago I posted about the whitewashed casting call for Nico Minoru’s character in the Runaways comic book film. But I just read some really good news over at Zatanna’s Tumblr via, who really busted their asses and got on Marvel’s case about the casting issue in a major way. Here’s Marvel’s response:

“Thank you for reaching out regarding your concerns over Marvel’s recent casting notice for THE RUNAWAYS. We appreciate your interest in our production and with Marvel Entertainment.

“To address your concern over casting for the role of Nico, as we do with all of our films, we intend to stay true to the legacy and story of the comic when casting these parts. Thus, our goal is to cast an Asian American actress as depicted in the comic series and the casting notice will be adjusted accordingly.

“We thank you again for your correspondence and the opportunity to clarify our process.”

Marvel Studios

And the website for the casting call changed the text of the casting to read

Girl 1: Uniquely beautiful, nurturing but guarded
Female, Asian-American, must play 16-18
Must be at least 16 by January 2011

They also pushed the date for audition tapes back to September 15th so actresses would have time to get their monologues in for consideration. I am so effing psyched about this! I think it’s an impressive show of work and diligence on the part of the folks at and I am glad to read that Marvel was cooperative and willing to change their strategy without being reactionary or flat out rude and unresponsive. Hopefully this will be a good lesson for them in the future to make the right casting decisions the first time out!

O my Buddha, I had no idea Runaways was turning into a movie. I nearly had a heart attack when that Dakota Fanning movie came out, but now…it’s actually true. How wonderful ;]

I know, right? Something about the name “Runaways” automatically equals awesome fun times and (hopefully) cinematic goodness!
